Meeting: Tuesday, September 1, 7 PM at the Goggle Works
Join the Fun: Wear a tropical or bright colored shirt!

Program: Key West with Bob Ballantyne.

RBGC Southernmost Pt

Bob Ballantyne will give us a glance at Key West through the unique architecture and the interesting characters associated with them (from Hemingway to Capt. Tony). After he makes us laugh, “Key West” snacks will be served. Bob will be wearing tropical cruise wear. What’s tropical cruise wear you say? Look at Bob in the photo above — hint he is the one in the colorful shirt with tropical plants. Join in the fun by wearing your favorite tropical shirt or outfit!

RBGC Freeman Curry House

The “Freeman-Curry” house.

Who was Curry, and who was Freeman, and what role did they play in Key West history? This house was built in the 19th century in the Bahamas. Learn how it was disassembled, shipped to Key West and reassembled, then moved! No nails? Winch attached to a Banyon tree? Typical of old Key West architecture?

RBGC Capt Tony's

Bob and his son, Scott, stand under the sign for Captain Tony’s Saloon in Key West.

It wasn’t always Capt Tony’s Saloon – so whose was it and what is the link to Ernest Hemingway and Key West’s “literary” age? The story of the late Capt Tony, one of Key West’s most colorful characters – and one time mayor – the last tale in Bob’s show – may make you groan, laugh, and it surely will raise some eyebrows!

I have my tropical shirt ready. Hope to see you and your tropical outfit at our general meeting on September 1 at 7:00 PM at the GoggleWorks (“Key West North” for the evening).
