President’s Message:

IMPORTANT and EXCITING!  Construction of an Art Park at the GoggleWorks is beginning September 5, 2023.  Everyone must enter the GoggleWorks through the doors on Washington Street.  Everyone may still park in the regular lot that we have been parking in but you must walk around to the front of the building and use the Washington Street doors.  To stay informed visit the top of the GoggleWorks’ homepage at www.GoggleWorks.org.

Next issue, where did the Summer go?  I probably say this every September but I am pretty sure you are all thinking the same thing.  And then it hits you….It is time for all the Fall shows.  Check that inventory because our patrons can’t wait to see you and your beautiful handcrafted items on November 4 and November 5 at our 73rd annual juried Holiday Fine Art and Craft Festival.   Still time to send in your application by October 1, 2023 and you have two months to work on that inventory.   A few years ago Steve Hunter and I thought about changing it from Festival to Sale.  We know everyone likes to show what they have made but we also find great joy when our patrons buy our creations because of the uniqueness or it is just what they wanted or it is the perfect gift for that special person.  We as the craftsman and artist feel accomplished in many ways and thankful to our patrons.

Heemet Fescht at the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center is set for September 23, 2023 from 11 AM to 4 PM. If you want to demonstrate and be there with your craft, please get in touch with Patrick Donmoyer at 610 683 1589 or email at heritage@kutztown.edu.  You can always contact me also about this event.  Lots to do and see for all ages.  Kids and Grown-ups alike.

So enjoy your Labor Day weekend with your family and friends and I will see you all at our September meeting on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:00 PM.  What a way to end the Summer with the Ballantyne Family taking us on a rather ghostly trip to Key West!

Don’t forget to renew your membership.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Your President,

Programs:

Once again the Ballantynes bring to the guild a program based on Key West. September’s program is titled “Robert the Doll,” and is presented by Scott and Bob Ballantyne with Nancy bringing her freshly baked Key Lime cookies along with liquid refreshments.

Robert the Doll is Key West’s version of, and the original of, the story. It is based on an actual 40 inch tall doll that once belonged to Gene Otto, an eccentric artist that lived in Key West in the first half of the 20th century. Robert was the excelsior-stuffed childhood companion of Gene and came to the Keys in 1904. Whenever Gene got in trouble he would say quite firmly, “I didn’t do it … Robert did it.” The saying became common-place in early 20th century Keys’ jargon.

When Gene and his wife left Key West Robert ended up in the attic and turret of their big Victorian home. The Otto’s rented the house out, but the lease insisted that Robert be unmolested in the attic. However, he was rumored to move around in the attic and was often seen at one of the windows of the turret. When it later became a guest house, those who stayed there often reported odd sounds and ghostly sightings.

Robert now resides, after much movement and many tales, in a large Plexiglas display case at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West  and is their main  attraction.  But you dare not take his picture without first asking his permission, for many have had bad luck after doing so, as attested to by the many letters Robert has received over the years at the museum.

Learn more about Eugene Otto and his companion Robert at our September meeting.
