Programs:
Once again the Ballantynes bring to the guild a program based on Key West. September’s program is titled “Robert the Doll,” and is presented by Scott and Bob Ballantyne with Nancy bringing her freshly baked Key Lime cookies along with liquid refreshments.
Robert the Doll is Key West’s version of, and the original of, the story. It is based on an actual 40 inch tall doll that once belonged to Gene Otto, an eccentric artist that lived in Key West in the first half of the 20th century. Robert was the excelsior-stuffed childhood companion of Gene and came to the Keys in 1904. Whenever Gene got in trouble he would say quite firmly, “I didn’t do it … Robert did it.” The saying became common-place in early 20th century Keys’ jargon.
When Gene and his wife left Key West Robert ended up in the attic and turret of their big Victorian home. The Otto’s rented the house out, but the lease insisted that Robert be unmolested in the attic. However, he was rumored to move around in the attic and was often seen at one of the windows of the turret. When it later became a guest house, those who stayed there often reported odd sounds and ghostly sightings.
Robert now resides, after much movement and many tales, in a large Plexiglas display case at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West and is their main attraction. But you dare not take his picture without first asking his permission, for many have had bad luck after doing so, as attested to by the many letters Robert has received over the years at the museum.
Learn more about Eugene Otto and his companion Robert at our September meeting.
